The Bell Jar
Let's see if this format is at all possible. Okay, so I read the first five chapters and so far I just gotta say that this woman has no attention span. I mean, she can't focus on the present for more than two seconds and then she's off on some sort of unconnected tangent (which is an oxymoron, because a tangent has to be touching at some point). Did anyone notice that the editor lady didn't really uncover anything or say anything mean? And why the heck did she see a Chinese woman in the elevator mirror when she described her parent's heritage as European later on? But I guess I identify with the chick because she seems to have no idea what is going on with her life while it's going. And the lady told her that she needs to get goals, but she can't just pick one out of a hat. Oh, and I liked how the introduction was all about the publisher lady who never met the author and all her struggles. I liked the prose too, kinda Kerouacian with less drugs and more mental issues. Actually, I was really reminded of On the Road, which seems rather odd considering the fact that this book spawned all sorts of feminist group and I'm sure no women were encouraged by Jacky-boys words-o-wisdom.

So how about we comment on each section as one post and comments attached to that one post. Makes it easier to get to what you're looking for, right?
As for me, I absolutly loved the first five chapters. She may have been jumpy and nearly incoherant at times, but it read nearly like my mind works. I loved her turn of phrase. The way she describes things is random, off-the-wall, and serves to (at least for me) bring things to life in a way that most prose only tries to do. Oh, and talk about identifying with Esther. "Five foot ten in my stocking feet." That whole bit about how she hates being with shorter guys because she does this funny thing with her hips and slouches and feels like a circus freak...yeah, that spoke to me! I know exactly what she means about posture, but you know what? When the guy is only 2 inches shorter than you, it works. :) I'm really enjoying the story, too. I mean, getting sick after having to endure a tour of Lady's Day's perfect kitchens? How delightfully ironic, of course, it wasn't delightful if you were there, I suppose. I kind of feel like I'm Esther and Jess is Doreen...;) Minus the smoking...and the wild nights out with random men...and the totally bad girl attitude...and the not liking her...Okay, so I think Jess is kinda cynical and that's one of the things I like about her. :D Right, so how much are we going to read for next week? I wanna hear about why the baby being born made her Yale hunk such a hypocrite...
Let's do the next five for next Wednesday.
So, I'm annoyed by the character a little bit too. I don't know what's really with the character--she's interesting in the way that it's somewhat like stream-of-consciousness when she talks, but otherwise, it's a bit too hippy-hoppy-skippy for me. I will write more later, but I want to suggest that we move the day to commentary to fridays or saturdays...my weeks are filled up~!
